Dhare Alua

The director Sagir Ahmed

The director Sagir Ahmed

Released on: 15 June 1984
Screenplay & Direction: Sagir Ahmed
Production Co: Garuda Cinematographics
Story: Manorama Das
Camera: Bidushree Bindhani
Sound: Ram Teke
Editing, Asst. Direction: Bidhu Raul
Lyrics: Suryamani Tripathy, Harihar Panda
Music: Harihara Panda
Cast: Prithviraj Mishra, Sharmistha Matthews, Shibani Mahapatra, Dolagobinda Jena, Soumendra Tripathy, Amrita Ahmed, Sarat Mishra, Jalaluddin, Wazir, Rabi Choudhuri, Pratap Patra
Genre: Social, Drama

Note: Dhare Alua (Eng: A Ray of Light, BW, 140 min), directed by Sagir Ahmed was based on a story by Manorama Das. The film depicts the murder of the wife of a radical journalist.

Plot: Hemant, the scribe, is wrongfully sentenced to jail and he sends his children Bulu and Runu, for their security, to a family acquaintance in another village. Unable to withstand the tortures the children flee this place and take shelter at a stranger doctor’s place. Doctor Rudra is retired and his son Lalit is a rebel with a cause who has taken it upon himself to undo the wrongs caused by unscrupulous people in the society. Lalit’s wife Sumitra stays with her father-in-law to take care of him as well as the children.

When Hemant is released from jail he goes straight to meet his children. He comes across Lalit and recognizes the rebel in him. Both have the same purpose in life. Both want to remove injustice by force. Both are revolutionaries in their own ways. With this new found comrade and new mission in life , Hemant decides to let go of his family attachments and urges Doctor Rudra to give further shelter and care to his children. Though the circumstances turn ripe for revolutionary changes societal apathy and passiveness thwart any such possibilities. And in a twist of the tale entails Lalit is forced to surrender himself before the police. This suggestion comes from no other than Hemant. Such changes in revolutionary outlook are in conformity with new realities. Amidst the lost hopes and subdued convictions, the children provide a ray of hope and light. Not everything is lost. Children are free and see the world in a new light free of the baggage of irrelevant complexities, failed ideologies and blind mindless radicalisms. Time waits for them to shine in all their virgin brilliance. Cameraman Bidusri Bindhani has excelled in black and white photography. Prithviraj Mishra as Lalit, Sharmistha as Sumitra, Shibani Mohapatra as Hemant and Purna Bindhani as Rudra have given memorable performances . Soumendra Tripathy as Bulu and Amrita Ahmed as Runu also show promise as actors.

Note: Maya Miriga (Odia: ମାୟା ମିରିଗ, English: The Mirage, Colour, 120 Mins) is an award winning Odia film directed by Nirad Mohapatra.

Plot: Maya Miriga is concerned with the gradual and irreversible process of disintegration in a middle class joint family living in a small town in Orissa.

Still from Maya Miriga

Still from Maya Miriga

Raj Kishore Babu, an elderly head master in a school, lives modestly in a joint family. He has five children: Tuku, the eldest son, who is quiet and dutiful, works as a lecturer. Prabha, Tuku’s wife, is expecting their first issue and is dedicated to the running of the household.Tutu, the second son, is the great hope of the family. Following his brilliant academic career in Delhi, he is assured of a prestigious Government job. The third son, Bulu, clings to the family for his emotional security and is quick to see himself as a failure despite Tutu’s encouragement. The fourth son, Tulu, is the defiant one, ready to challenge the established family norms. Tikina, the youngest one is still at school. The family’s emotional centre is the gentle and worldly- wise grandmother. It is, however, Raj Kishore Babu who lays down the rules. His wife merely wields control over her daughter-in-law, Prabha.

When Prabha gives birth to a daughter, family expectations are let down. But soon enough, Tutu’s final selection for a prestigious I.A.S. job more than makes up for everything. As his newly acquired status demands, he marries above his social milieu. The house is transformed with modern gadgets and new furniture after Tutu’s marriage. Irritations arise, which reflect the beginning of changes in the joint family household. Tutu’s city-bred wife will not follow in Prabha’s footsteps as a traditional daughter-in-law, the role that is expected of her. On the flimsy pretext of her mother’s sickness, she declines to stay with her in-laws while her husband is away on training. Prabha resents the preferential treatment given to the new
couple. Soon after the couple leave, the grandmother suffers a stroke and dies the same night.

Still from Maya Miriga

Still from Maya Miriga

Prabha’s sense of oppression, resulting from the joint family system , increases. She sees others who are better off because they do not need to share their income. Prabha can only express her resentment gradually to her husband, Tuku, as she realizes the deep sense of dedication her husband has towards the joint family.

Raj Kishore Babu retires from his work as headmaster. He is depressed and only finds solace in the company of another retired official. The latter pins all his hopes on the return of his only son who lives in America.

Tulu, the defiant one gets a first class graduate degree. He wishes to follow his brother’s footsteps and study in Delhi. Bulu, the ‘failure’ of the family, realizes that he will be all alone and left completely on his own. The family persuades Tulu to await the return of the successful brother Tutu, who is due to visit the family on the way to his first posting. His wife accompanies him only to collect her dowry possessions. She insists on doing it despite her husband’s embarrassment at her material preoccupation.

Tutu expresses reluctance to help finance his younger brother’s education in Delhi. The father comes down heavily on his favorite son and reminds him of the sacrifices they made to educate him in Delhi. Finally, Tutu, in shame, gives in. The eldest son chooses this moment to slip in the news of his deputation to a post in the State capital.

The disintegration of the family is by now apparent. An uneasy silence follows. In the quietness of the night, and in the privacy of their rooms, the family members recollect the warmth of their togetherness, yet are painfully aware of the impossibility of staying together.

Next morning, Tutu and his wife leave with their dowry items. Prabha, for the first time, declines to light up the oven feigning sickness. The mother has to take on the responsibility of the family. Reflecting on the state of affairs, Raj Kishore Babu ironically asks his two year old grand child, ‘will you too leave us’.

The Art House Stalwarts

Can Oriya art cinema revitalise?

From Mrinal Sen’s Matira Manisha and Nitai Palit’s Mala Janha in the 1960s to Manmohan Mahapatra’s Muhurta in 2000, film lovers have seen with relief and joy a stream of parallel cinema in Orissa that had been trudging its way — though through ups as well as downs. But then the last decade has witnessed nothing to rejoice about on this front. If there was a plenitude of new-wave films from 1970-2000, the graph 2000-09 has plummeted like never before. Lack of support from the state government, receding audience interest and absence of the profit quotient in the form of returns have exacerbated the situation.

During the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s, such movies — released occasionally in theatres and mostly on national channel Doordarshan — were widely viewed and appreciated. Mostly produced on low budgets (Rs 25 lakh to Rs 30 lakh), these films used to be partly funded by the government (up to Rs 15 lakh) through the national and state film development corporation, while the producers paid the rest. Their makers did know that their works were not commercially viable, but more often than not they would end up winning a national award or two. That would ensure they got a chunk of their money back — along with the telecast of the films on DD (which paid up to Rs 8 lakh). But once the government set up the Prasar Bharati (in 1997) as an autonomous corporation comprising both DD and All India Radio, that amount too came down with a change of rules. And that made even the telecasts rarer.

Orissa today has master filmmakers who rue the fallen graph of the state’s parallel cinema — and don’t hesitate to give the public television broadcaster much of the credit in galvanising the artistic movement for the final three decades of last century. “By the 1970s,” notes Nirad Mohapatra, maker of the much-acclaimed Maya Miriga (1984), “parallel cinema had gathered momentum in many regions of our country, including Orissa — though, only in a few pockets of the state. The enlightened audience here was aware of this new development, but they only had a glimpse of it on DD.” Even so, he notes that not everything was encouraging for the movement in Orissa. “With the sole exception of Maitra Manisha (1966) the prevailing state of affairs did not encourage any such production,” notes Mohapatra, whose Maya Miriga won the national award for the second-best feature film besides the best film in the state awards.

Maya Miriga was part of a package deal for three films between National Film Development Corporation and Orissa Film Development Corporation (OFDC) to support good cinema in Orissa. “My film too had a restricted release. In the urban centres, it was screened in the morning and noon,” he recalls. And adds: “The story is not any different today.”

Raju Mishra, whose Lakshmi Ra Abhisara was a much talked about film in the genre, feels art cinema in Orissa is “practically non-existent”. “These days, it’s more about awards than commercial success. A director cannot manipulate commercial success, but an art film director needs an award come what may. This increases the credibility of the film — and the director too,” he says. Currently busy in making of the sequel of Hum Log for DD, Mishra says, “the economics simply don’t work out now for such films in our state.” He attributes the mess to the negative attitude of the government, the absence of a means to get returns for the investment and a lack of audience for art films in the state.

One basic problem lies in getting past the stranglehold of the existing distributor-exhibitor nexus and reaching out to the audience. Many such films that broke away from the mainstream had to be content with Doordarshan release only since they were never taken to the masses. But not all are pessimistic. Manmohan Mahapatra, who has made the maximum number of art films for Orissa and has clinched many national awards, disagrees. “This is a transitional phase. I am hopeful that things will improve in some time from now, with the creation of an alternate channel and government patronage. I can see many young directors showing keenness to direct parallel cinema and we need to cultivate good audiences,” says Manmohan whose films like Sita Rati (1982), Niraba Jhada (’84), Majhi Pahacha (’87), Nisiddha Swapna (’88), Kichi Smruti Kichi Anubhuti (’89) and many more have turned out to be national award winners.

Nirad Mohapatra strikes a middle path. “If we can catch them young at the university level and provide opportunities to see good cinema from all over the world, it can generate an enlightened audience,” he notes. “But to reach out to that audience a parallel channel like the Art Theatre in Europe may have to be worked out.”For the record, those who have done commendable work in Oriya art films include A K Bir, Shagir Ahmed, Shantanu Mishra, Biplab Roy Choudhury, Pranab Das, Sushant Mishra, Subas Das, Bijay Ketan Mishra, Malay Ray, Gouri Das, Himanshu Khatua, Prafulla Mohanty, Chakradhar Sahu, Sabyasachi Mohapatra and Dolly Jena.

Film societies too have a role in promoting good cinema other than government patronage. Points out film critic Ashok Palit: “We just have two societies. How do we arouse an interest in our audience for such films? We don’t have a dearth of good stories neither do we lack filmmakers. What is required is ample number of cinema halls for the masses to watch meaningful cinema. Moreover, to dev elop audience interest, the role of media is of utmost importance.”

OFDC chairman Sitakant Mishra, however, is upbeat. Mishra, who has produced a couple of films like Bhanga Silata (1987) and Shodh (1980, which introduced Om Puri) in Hindi, explains that concerted efforts have led to a rise in OSFD’s government funding from this year to Rs 75 lakh from Rs 15 lakh. “We can now finance good scripts up to Rs 15 lakh and another Rs 1 lakh for censor clearance. In the process, we can go up to financing five films per year.

And there will be a committee which will approve good scripts.”Mishra also adds that the government is planning in collaboration with various Mumbai-based groups to make good cinema in digital mode and show them in digital film halls with a capacity of 150 to 200 people.“Efforts are also on to revive the Kalinga Studio, the only film studio in Orissa, with the help of private entrepreneurship for which tenders will be floated soon and there are many people who are showing interest too.” Looks like a silver streak could still light up the Oriya screen.
